ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to analyze the causes of failure after a primary anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction (ACLR), associated injuries, and the clinical results of revision ACLR. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This study evaluated 46 patients (46 knees), who were followed at least two years after revision ACLR. The evaluations included the causes of failure after primary ACLR, associated injuries, 2000 International Knee Documentation Committee (IKDC) subjective knee scores, Lachman test, Pivot shift test, and KT-1000 arthrometer measurement. RESULTS: The most common cause of failure was trauma (27 patients, 58.7%) and 19 failures (19 patients, 41.3%) were caused using an inappropriate surgical technique. The associated injuries were meniscus tears in 29 cases (63.0%) and articular cartilage injuries of Outerbridge grade II to IV in 19 cases (41.3%). The IKDC scores, Lachman test, Pivot shift test, and KT-1000 arthrometer measurements were improved significantly at the final follow-up. CONCLUSION: The most common cause of failure after primary ACLR was trauma. One stage revision ACLR resulted in relatively satisfactory stability but less satisfactory clinical function than the primary reconstruction, as reported previously, which is believed to be due to the more associated injuries.

ABSTRACT

Bokbunja (Rubus Coreanus Miquel) is a wild berry to Rosaceae genus of which application areas have been expanded due to many health effects. Bokbunja contains carbohydrates, protein, fats and dietary fibers as major components and various flavonoids such as tannins, volatile components including organic acids, alcohols and hydrocarbons as minor ones. Those active compounds attribute to increase in immune function, antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activity. Recently pure compounds have been isolated from the extracts for the development of medicines. We report here on two cases of acne vulgaris that was successfully treated with Rubus Coreanus Miquel extracts.

ABSTRACT

Recent studies suggest that alterations in glutamate receptor subunit levels in mesocorticolimbic dopamine areas could account for neural adaptations in response to psychostimulant drugs. Although many drugs of abuse induce changes in ionotropic glutamate receptor subunits in mesocorticolimbic dopamine areas, the changes of ionotropic glutamate receptor subunits by repeated nicotine treatment in these areas are not known. To answer this question, we injected male Sprague-Dawley rats twice daily with nicotine (0.4 mg/kg) or saline (1 ml/kg) for 10 days. The immunoreactivity of NR1, GluR1, and GluR2 glutamate receptor subunits was examined 16~18 h after the last injection of saline or nicotine. Repeated nicotine treatment significantly increased NR1 levels in the ventral tegmental area (VTA). In addition, repeated nicotine treatment showed a tendency towards an increase in GluR1 levels in the VTA as well as in striatum. However, there was no significant change in glutamate receptor subunits in other areas including nucleus accumbens (NAc). These results demonstrate that repeated nicotine treatment increases NR1 levels in VTA similarly to other drugs of abuse, suggesting that elevated glutamate receptor subunits in the VTA, but not NAc may be involved in the excitation of mesocorticolimbic dopamine neurons by nicotine.
